An active shooter at TF Green Airport in Rhode Island, USA has prompted the airport to be placed under lockdown while emergency services are responding to a “potential security threat.”

The airport confirmed its current lockdown status as law enforcement addresses the potential security threat.

A witness, who was at the airport during the incident, reported on Twitter that the airport had been shut down due to an active shooter, with SWAT, state police, and fire department presence.

According to local media outlets, both state and Warwick Police responded to the airport after receiving reports of a man with a gun in a parking garage.

Warwick Police Chief Bradford Connor, speaking to 12 News, stated, “We received a call of a possible threat at the airport. Multiple agencies are investigating now and conducting a search of the parking lots.”

The parking garage is being cleared by a SWAT team, while state police have established a perimeter around the area, revealed Rhode Island State Police Colonel Darnell Weaver in an interview with 12 News.

Weaver stated, “Preliminary information suggests the call came into Warwick Police about a potential suspect with a rifle. They responded to the area, and it was isolated to the parking garage, not the actual terminal.”

In an official statement, the airport announced, “Rhode Island TF Green Airport is currently in lockdown as law enforcement addresses a potential security threat. Travellers are asked to delay arrivals at the airport at this time. More information will be provided when available.”

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation noted that the incident was causing traffic disruptions on the Airport Connector. They reported, “All Travel Lanes blocked on Airport Connector EB at Exit 1A (Jefferson Boulevard) in Warwick – Incident at TF Green Airport.”

Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos advised the public to avoid the area and informed that the airport is temporarily on lockdown. She added that the police have responded and are on the scene and promised to provide updates as the situation develops.
