Miller was educated at Taylor Allderdice High School, and taught himself to play guitar, piano, bass and drums, while initially striving to become a singer and songwriter, but instead started rapping at the age of 14. Miller change his stage name frequently, and had several aliases before becoming Mac Miller.Under one of his then accepted nicknames “EZ Mac” Miller released his first mixtape entitled “But My Mackin’ Ain’t Easy” in 2007. At the time, Miller was part of a rap group “The III Spoken” with Brian Greene – known as Beedie – a fellow rapper from Pittsburg. In 2008, the group released a mixtape “How High”, and a year later, Miller released two more mixtapes: “The Jukebox: Prelude to Class Clown” and “The High Life”. That same year Mac participated in the MC competition in Shadow Lounge, and even made it to the final four.
The highlight of Miller’s rapping career occurred in 2010, when he was signed to Rostrum Records, an independent record label with such artists as Wiz Khalifa, Leon Thomas III, Boaz and Donora. At this time, Miller’s popularity and his net worth began to increase, and even though he received many offers from other record labels, he decided to stay with Rostrum and that same year released a mixtape entitled “K.I.D.S”. That same year Miller went on his first tour – “Incredibly Dope Tour” – that sold out in every location, and to add more to Miller’s success in 2010, he won two awards at the Pittsburg hip hop awards.
Miller continued his successful rapping career with several publicly acclaimed albums; in 2011, he released a mixtape called “I Love Life, Thank You”, featuring such artists as Talib Kweli and Bun B, that debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 144,000 copies sold during its first week. Another album that brought Miller a lot of commercial success was “Watching Movies with the Sound Off”, released in 2013, which topped the Billboard charts, selling 101,000 copies during the first week, and spawned 3 singles. During his rapping career, Mac Miller has released six studio albums, as well as a number of mixtapes, and has launched five successful tours worldwide.
In addition to the revenue collected from the sales of his albums, Miller has launched a reality documentary television series entitled “Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family”, which centers around him and four of his friends, who settle in his house in California. The show has aired for two seasons so far. 1 | [on his 2013 album 'Watching Movies with the Sound Off'] It was great to just like really have a firm belief in what I was doing and stand by it and fight for it and just kind of trust my own creative thought process, and then have it work out in both reception, quality-wise, and also commercial success-wise. It's not necessarily about the numbers, but it was great to me that an album like that could sell, and especially on an independent label. |
